Significant population outbreaks of spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) have been observed in perennial grasses (Poaceae) established in farms from western Santa Catarina, Brazil. This situation is worrying local producers in relation to the continuous supply of forage due to the significant damage caused by this pest species complex. Thus, this study aimed to evaluated the incidence of spittlebugs (Hemiptera: Cercopidae) in three perennial grasses [Cynodon dactylon cv. Jiggs, C. dactylon cv. Tifton 85, and Axonopus catharinensis cv. SCS 315 Catarina Gigante (Poales: Poaceae)] in a farm under semi-intensive milk production system. For this purpose, weekly counts of foams (nymphs) were carried out in 10 points of 0.25 m2 (0.5 x 0.5 m) each, totalizing 20 assessments from September 2015 to January 2016. The spittlebugs? incidence was significantly different (F2, 27 = 14.23; p <0.0001) among the three perennial grasses. Lower incidence of spittlebugs (5.22 foams m-2 week-1 in average) was observed on A. catharinensis cv. SCS 315 Catarina Gigante, which is a native species from South Brazil, followed by C. dactylon cv. Jiggs (7.44 foams m-2 week-1 in average) and by C. dactylon cv. Tifton 85 (10.48 foams m-2 week-1 in average). Moreover, two characteristic population peaks was observed: the first in the middle of September and the second in the end of November, which can indicate the appropriate time for this insect pest control. These preliminary information generated in this study are useful to support management strategies of spittlebugs in pastures and, consequently, reduce the impact of these insect pests on forage production, as well as the negative effects on productivity and costs of dairy farming developed in the region.
